Win Plans for the Penny Fee

Iain Oughtred | 1939–2024, Photo by Brice Avery

February marks one year since the passing of Iain Oughtred, the prolific boat designer whose work has been featured in Small Boats many times. Around the world—and amongst our own staff—professional and amateur boatbuilders alike have built boats from his designs. Now, as a tribute to Iain’s memory and his impact on the world of small boats, we’re offering the chance for one lucky reader to win a set of printed plans for the Oughtred Penny Fee, a 15′11″ lapstrake dinghy for sail and oar. The plans sell for $231 at The WoodenBoat Store.

This classic stem-and-transom dinghy is designed for glued-lap (clinker) plywood construction. Plans include 8 sheets of drawings, plus 16 pages of additional notes from Iain. Read more about Penny Fee in this profile by Mats Vuorenjuuri.

To help the winner with their project, we’re also including a copy of Iain’s Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual. The book reveals everything you need to know about glued-lap plywood boat construction, including the tools and materials needed, lining off, setting up the building jig, planking, interior work, and fitting out, along with hundreds of drawings and photos.

We’re accepting entries from now until 5 p.m. EST on March 17, 2025. We’ll announce the winner by email on March 19.
