The brief was for a 1950s/1960s-style boat with a pair of seats behind a protective windscreen, with room for gear or extra passengers aft, and to use in the Gulf Islands, an archipelago in the inland sea between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland.

Shrimper 19 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/shrimper-19/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/shrimper-19/#comments Wed, 27 Jul 2022 02:25:51 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=48536 British builder Cornish Crabbers says the Shrimper 19 was the best seller in its line of sailboats ranging from 17′ to 30′ for decades, though now the roomier and much costlier Shrimper 21 has ascended to top seller in its lineup.

Firefly https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/firefly/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/firefly/#comments Wed, 27 Jul 2022 02:24:40 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=48534 The Firefly has all the attributes for a fast boat appropriate for novices focusing on rowing for exercise or sport. The panel-on-frame construction lends itself to backyard boatbuilding, and the low count of individual parts signals a reasonably quick construction.

Sailing to Denton https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/sailing-to-denton/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/sailing-to-denton/#comments Wed, 27 Jul 2022 02:23:59 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=48532 The Choptank quickly narrowed from one-third bemile at the creek to 150 yards just a half mile to the north. There was a wide stretch of marshland on both sides; thick stands of jade green arrow arum along water’s edge, its broad spiked leaves pointing to the sky, a mottled mix of marsh grass behind it. Beating to windward in this narrow passage to Denton required short tacks all the way. I didn’t dare test the depth close to the exposed mud banks. I needed to maintain boat speed to guarantee the tacks. Twice, I stood to hold the boom out to windward to bring TERRAPIN’s head across.

Excursion https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/excursion/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/excursion/#comments Sat, 25 Jun 2022 01:52:18 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=47305 The whole experience of building the Excursion was interesting, enjoyable, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. The custom kit package enabled me, a complete novice, to build a beautiful recreational kayak that I am proud of and will be happy to paddle for years to come.

Little Crab https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/little-crab/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/little-crab/#comments Wed, 27 Apr 2022 12:28:38 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=45014 This little boat is an absolute blast to sail. You sit on the bottom and see everything forward under the boom. Your head is only a foot or so above the water, and when the boat gets going it’s like you’re flying, and oh, that sound the water makes under and along the hull!

The Six-Hour Canoe https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/six-hour-canoe/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/six-hour-canoe/#comments Wed, 27 Apr 2022 12:18:51 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=45012 The Six-Hour Canoe, in all its simplicity, is a perfect choice for a first boatbuilding project no matter what your age or skill level. We have students doing so in our classes at Buffalo Maritime Center all the time. In the various boatbuilding programs I’ve been involved in, I have partnered with boatbuilding students with every degree of hand-eye coordination to build hundreds of Six-Hour Canoes.

Hunky Dory https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/hunky-dory/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/hunky-dory/#comments Sat, 19 Mar 2022 19:57:14 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=43226 The Hunky Dory is a versatile design, although it is in some ways too much boat for many inland waters and has too much flat bottom surface area to be practical for moving at speed in waters known for chop. However, this tough, stable boat delivers you through the surf to productive fishing resources in a big ocean. For that alone, it’s a magical thing.

Handy Billy https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/handy-billy/ https://smallboatsmonthly.com/article/handy-billy/#comments Sun, 20 Feb 2022 02:10:23 +0000 https://smallboatsmonthly.com/?post_type=article&p=42100 Harry's website designates this build as best for someone having intermediate skills. It is helpful to have some skills in woodworking (cutting, fitting, and shaping) and problem-solving, but having good work habits and a capacity for project management and planning will also really pay off.
